I Am Spider-man
With the recent release of the Spider-man: Homecoming trailer, it’s easy to forget that Sony also have an animated Spider-man film in the works – a film which we now know will star an entirely different wall-crawler. Sony Pictures announced today that Miles Morales will headline the new standalone film.
For those who don’t know, Miles Morales – a mixed-race teenager of half Hispanic and half African-American descent – was created in 2011 by longtime Marvel comics writer Brian Michael Bendis and Italian artist Sara Pichelli as the new Spider-man in the publisher’s “Ultimate” line of comics.
Taking over the title from the recently deceased Peter Parker, Miles became an instant hit with fans, so much so that after Marvel decided to bring the character into the mainstream 616 universe after the conclusion of the ultimate line of comics. He currently stars in The Champions (an offshoot of The Avengers) and Spider-man series of comics.
Miles also appeared in a few episodes of the Disney XD animated series Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors (where he was voiced by Donald Glover) and will co-star alongside Peter Parker and Spider-Gwen in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-man animated series premiering this summer on the network.
Having Miles star in the animated film while Peter Parker stars in the live action universe is a great way for Sony and Marvel to please fans and promote both of the characters. There is no word yet on whether Peter Parker will have any role in the animated film.
21 Jump Street & The Lego Movie’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to co-write the script and will serve as co-executive producers on the film. Bob Persichetti & Peter Ramsey will direct the film for a December 21st 2018 release date.
