Originally set to begin filming this May in Vancouver, production on the highly anticipated sequel has been pushed back by just over a month, presumably to give Ryan Reynolds and the writing team more time to develop the script. The news comes via an update on casting site myentertainmentworld.com
Original Deadpool writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (the writing duo also penned Zombieland and the upcoming Ryan Reynolds lead film Life) are currently hard at work on the screenplay, along with newcomer to the franchise Drew Goddard, who recently joined the production as a writing consultant.
An incredibly talented filmmaker, Goddard directed The Cabin in the Woods which he co-wrote with Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon, he developed Daredevil for netflix, was set to direct a Sinister Six movie at Sony before the studio team with Marvel Studios to reboot the Spider-Man franchise, wrote The Martian for Ridley Scott and wrote Cloverfield for upcoming The Batman director Matt Reeves.
So far Ryan Reynolds is the only confirmed cast member attached to the film. Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapicic, Morena Baccarin and Karan Soni are all expected to return as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Colossus, Vanessa and Dopinder respectively.
The hunt is currently on for an actor to play Cable, aka the time traveling mutant son of X-men leader Cyclops. Many actors are vying for or have been rumored for the highly sought after role, with Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Pierce Brosnan (Goldeneye), Stephan Lang (Avatar), Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys) and Liam Neeson (Taken) all reportedly in the running for the part.
Domino, a mutant who possesses probability-altering powers, has yet to be cast as well. Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond, Mackenzie Davis (Halt and Catch Fire), Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Ruby Rose (Orange Is the New Black), Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies), Kelly Rohrbach (Baywatch), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), Sylvia Hoeks (Overspel) and Kerry Washington (Scandal) all on FOX’s rumored shortlist for the film.
The first Deadpool movie was a huge success for FOX, raking in almost $800,000,000 worldwide over the course of its theatrical run and receiving two golden globe nominations for Best motion picture -Musical or Comedy and best performance by an actor in a motion picture – Musical or Comedy for star Ryan Reynolds.
Deadpool 2 is just one of many projects currently in development at FOX as part of the X-men universe. Logan releases March 3rd, both X-men: Supernova and X-men: The New Mutants are slated to begin filming this summer and the television series from Matt Nix recently cast Gotham actress Jamie Chung as teleporting mutant Blink. Deadpool 3 and X-force are also in development at the studio.
The release date for the film has yet to be announced, though we expect to hear something relatively soon.
